Psyllium husks come from the seed of the plant Plantago ovata, native to India. The husk of psyllium is the actual coating of mucilage around the seed. Psyllium is a bulking fibre, which when added to water can expand to up to ten times its size. The husks are not digested in the small intestine, but are partially broken down in the colon, where they act as a food source for friendly flora.
How to use: Psyllium husks are highly absorbent and should be introduced to your diet gradually. Add 1-2 teaspoons of psyllium husks to a large glass of water (at least 250ml), stir vigorously, and drink immediately. Follow with another large glass of water, and increase your water intake throughout the day. Psyllium husks can also be added to soups, sauces or smoothies.
May contain traces of nuts and gluten.
Pysllium should be avoided if you have (or had in the past) a bowel obstruction or a disease that causes narrowing of the digestive tract. If you have any health concerns, consult your doctor or nutritionist.
