Veinte Vinos - Twenty Wines for Spanish Wine Week 2020
Now in its 5th year, Spanish Wine Week in Ireland is taking place this week. Celebrating the diversity of regions and grapes that make up Spanish viniculture, it is a great opportunity to explore new wines and revisit old favourites.
Here at Ardkeen Quality Food Store we have chosen 20 of our favourite Spanish wines to feature. All great wines, all offering generous discounts.
Many of our favourite producers feature. We have Raul Acha’s Toro success Matsu El Picaro, Alvaro Palacios who has put Bierzo and the Mencía grape variety on the map with his Patalos and Bodega Gutiérrez Colosía dispelling any myths that Sherry is not for everyday enjoyment.
Choosing 20 wines cannot definitively represent Spain’s enormously rich viniculture heritage but it does gave a good taste of Spain. Many are terroir driven wines from small Bodegas where the emphasis is on high quality, low volume and production methods that reflect the character and personality of the surrounding land and micro-climate. From classic and food friendly Viña Zorzal Garnacha, Ribero’s jewel in the crown Treixadura to Rioja produced Villa Conchi Cava, there is so much to explore.
You can discover more about many these wines styles and food pairings by joining us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for the week ahead. Follow #SpanishWineWeek #SWW20 for more fiesta and inspiration and of course, join us instore throughout the week for lots of wine chat and recommendations.

It starts at the end of August and extends till the end of October. It is usually carried out manually and the grapes are transported to the winery in boxes containing 25-30 kgs or in small stainless steel trailers when the vineyard is close to the winery.
Grapes are harvested at night to avoid high temperatures and premature fermentations. They are quickly transported to the winery and refrigerated at 10ºC to avoid the color of the skins dyeing the must. Once the must is pressed and each variety has fermented separately at a constant 16ºC to preserve its primary aromas, the must is blended and bottled along with the base wine, to which the yeast and sugar are added to produce the formation of bubbles. For the second fermentation, the bottles are kept in underground cellars at a constant 15º-17ºC where they are in contact with their lees.
This cava spends a minimum of 12 months in the bottle,. After this period, sediments are decanted naturally and removed and liqueur is added.
