The proof of the pudding is in the tasting
The history and traditions behind Christmas cake and Plum Pudding are fascinating. A celebration of the Christmas festive period they are recorded as far back as the 16C. Many rituals around their making were established. Some, which involved including 13 ingredients to represent Christ and the 12 apostles, have likely fallen away but many others still hold firm. The custom of everyone in the household, or at least every child giving the mixture a stir and make a wish while doing so holds firm today in many houses. Though unlikely still known as it was in times past as ‘Stir up Sunday’, these traditions remind us of the food traditions around the Christmas festive period and bring with them a sense of place and time.
