For this week’s Thursday Tasting we have two beautiful Irish products. Homespun Quinoa Crunch and Rockfield Sheep’s Cheese, both of which are firm favourites here at Ardkeen Quality Food Store.

Born out of a passion to create plant based nutritious products, Homespun Quinoa Crunch is owner Erica Sheehan’s award winning nutritious and delicious twist on granola. The seeds of a flowering plant in the Amaranth family, Quinoa provides protein, dietary fibre, B vitamins, and dietary minerals in rich amounts above those of wheat, corn, rice or oats.

Coming in two distinctive flavours: ‘Goji Berries, Cashew and Coconut’ and ‘Pecan and Cranberry’, Homespun Quinoa Crunch is wheat & dairy-free, high in fibre & vitamin E as well as a source of iron and folic acid. It is handmade in Ireland by Homespun.

Whether enjoyed as a cereal, snack or topping on fruit, yoghurt or porridge, it is a delicious way to bring quinoa and other nourishing plant-based proteins into your daily diet.

Speaking of yogurt…

We have been stocking Velvet Cloud sheep’s milk yogurt here at Ardkeen Quality Foods Store since its launch (much to the delight of consumers and chefs all around Ireland it has to be said!) a number of years ago. Well the good folk at Rockfield Farm, Michael and Aisling Flanagan have only done it again with their sheep’s milk cheese, Rockfield Farm hitting the shelves recently.

Handmade on the family farm in Claremorris, Mayo, using only two ingredients: fresh sheep’s milk from their own flock of Friesland and Lacaune ewes and live probiotic yogurt cultures, this small batch three month aged semi hard cheese is a delight.

When compared to cow’s milk, sheep’s milk has higher concentrations of proteins, fats, minerals, and vitamins and has higher levels of “heart healthy fats”.  Because of the unique properties of sheep’s milk, it suits many with digestive challenges or who are allergic to cow’s milk.

Perfect for summer dining, Rockfield Sheep’s Cheese is versatile, working well as part of a dish or on its own. For wine pairing think a Spanish Albariño or for something a little different, try a chilled Fino or Amontillado sherry. We may even have one to taste on the day ;-)
