Local Tomatoes Are Back!
In life, we tend to celebrate the big things (winning awards for instance!) but often the greatest joy comes from something very small. So, last week we were overjoyed with our Best in Retail Award from Waterford Chamber of Commerce, but this week we are equally exuberant at the arrival of the first of this seasons locally grown tomatoes.
It’s been a long tasteless tomato Winter awaiting the arrival of these intensely flavourful love apples!
Much of the fruit and vegetables consumed in Ireland are imported. By stocking locally grown produce, which has not been stored and transported from afar, we can guarantee the superior freshness and quality, as well as the ultimate in trace-ability and this is never more evident than with Grantstown Tomatoes.
Based at Callaghane just off the road to Dunmore East, 3 miles from our store, the Currid family has supplied Ardkeen Quality Food Store with a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables for several decades. The main crop at Grantstown Nurseries are tomatoes. Those destined for our shelves are picked ripe and delivered the same day. Varieties grown include Cheetah, a traditional round tomato, as well as mini plum San Marzano and cherry varieties like Suntini Sweet. We even have range grown for us exclusively – Tomtation- the perfect addition to any salad bowl with their splashes of orange yellow & red.
I know it's Spring-Time but the arrival of these little juicy tomatoes have brought with them the anticipation of longer days, sunny evenings and dining al fresco…of course we’re celebrating!
