Is 50 too old for Electric Picnic?! No Way!
It’s all getting a little hectic in the Ardkeen offices these days…in case we hadn’t mentioned it we’re planning a big birthday bash to celebrate our 50th year in business….yep we’re oldies but goodies and we’re proving our resilience by packing up and heading to Electric Picnic on the first weekend in September where we are provisioning the ingredients for great & good of Ireland's culinary community for the 3rd year running.
We often get asked if EP is really our kind of audience, but truth be told we’ve rarely attended an event which has such exuberance for expanding the consciousness of what great Irish food is all about. Sally & John McKenna have a knack of bringing together the most talented and funky collection of chefs, bakers, makers, cookery writers and musicians who enthral an audience willing to scoop up every morsel of deliciousness and detail. It’s really mighty craic and everyone is so honestly engaged. Lots of demo’s, lots of questions, lots of tasting and more than a little dancing thrown in – what better way to communicate the message of great Irish food?
The line-up this year includes culinary greats like Rory O’Connell, Paul Flynn and Kevin Thornton, our favourite social foodies The Happy Pear and Rosanna Davidson, whilst the Assassination Custard duo will challenge your food prejudices and that is just for starters! Colin and Kevin are taking to the stage with Chef Michael Quinn to tell a little about the ethos of Ardkeen and the producers we champion ...there maybe some cooking too!
We’re also looking forward to working with Caitlin Ruth (from Deasy’s in Clonakilty) Caitlin and her band of merry helpers in the backstage kitchen ensure everyone gets a taste of whatever is being whipped up on stage. The fact that she’s a true supporter of Irish produce shines through as we carry in our crates of provisions and she lets out squeals of delight, launching into discussions about each producer, the ones she’s met, the ones she wants to…an enthusiasm which is evident to everyone who tastes her cooking.
Ok…we’re off to find some tent poles and prove we’re still fabulous at 50!
