As we look around us instore, we see the wealth of experience we have on hand from all our entrepreneurial small producers, they know every nook and cranny of their businesses and the produce they work so hard to create or farm. It's essential, they work in small scale, their businesses are not large conglomerates with big research, development and equipment budgets but what they do have is an abundance of passion for making good food. It's easy to see that these guys are large part of what makes our store unique, we in turn try to ensure they have as much visibility instore as possible. We encourage sampling days and highlight their stories and produce, instore and online, but sometimes you need an expert to step in and bridge the gap between the shopping basket and the kitchen!

Last Friday we hosted a cookery demo with local chef Keith Boyle of the Bay Tree Bistro. Keith's ethos is simply "locally sourced food, cooked locally by a local Chef". "All of Keith's produce is sourced from small artisan suppliers where possible or from local butchers, fishmongers and farmers. Everything is made inhouse from breads and desserts to stocks, sauces, pastas and ice cream, and he firmly believes that quality always prevails over quantity.”

What a perfect match for us at Ardkeen and all the better that many of our producers are also his suppliers, like Ballymackenny Farm, Mooncoin Beetroot, Fancy Fungi, and Gubbeen Smokehouse.

Our customers were treated to a remarkable shopping experience as Keith cooked every dish from scratch whilst taking time to talk to each producer and delve into the stories and tastes behind their food. Like we said collaboration is the name of the game!

    Ballymakenny Pink Fir Apple Potatoes 1kg

    Ballymakenny Farm is run by husband and wife David and Maria, a tillage and potato farm based in Drogheda, County Louth. 

    Pink Fir Apple is the original salad potato, this late maincrop produces long, pink knobbly tubers with a similar look to artichokes. The flesh is a creamy yellow and waxy with a very distinctive nutty taste.

    Pink Fir Apple is highly recommended as an excellent boiling slad potato delicious eaten either hot or cold.

    Ballymakenny Farm is run by husband and wife David and Maria, a tillage and potato farm based in Drogheda, County Louth. 

    Violetta is a specialist heritage potato variety with an indigo blue skin and blue flesh. They have a delicate sweet flavour, a slightly fluffy flesh and work well in savoury dishes. To retain the colour, it’s best to keep the skin on.
