Blas na hÉireann - The Irish Food Awards

Blas na hÉireann – The Irish Food Awards
Blas na hÉireann – The Irish Food Awards

Blas na hEireann, The Irish Food Awards take place annually on the first weekend in October. Set against the backdrop of the Dingle Peninsula Food Festival the event, recognises and celebrates the very best of Irish food and drink. Now in its 10th year this is the largest blind tasting on the island of Ireland, the criteria on which the product is judged as well as the judging system itself, which was developed in association with the Food Science Dept of UCC, is now recognised as an international industry standard. This year more than 400 finalist producers competed in 130 categories.

2017 has proven another triumphant year for ardkeen.com producers, we stock over 25 of the winning foods and are delighted the hard work and dedication of these small batch producers have being recognised.

O’Neills Dry Cure Bacon Co Dry Cured Rashers 300g

Awarded 2 Stars at the Great Taste Awards 2016 & 2017

At O'Neills Dry Cure Bacon Co., we know a thing or two about bacon. We know that the tastiest rashers are dry cured by hand in a traditional way which stops them shrinking the pan. Using our unique family recipe, we dry cure Irish pork with natural sea salt to enhance the flavour. Our rashers contain 30% less salt that the average rasher and as we don't add water, no phosphates are needed. The result, proper rashers that taste and cook like they should.

  • Coffee House Lane 1690 Blend Beans 227g

Coffee House Lane 1690 Blend Beans 227g

This 1690 Wholebean coffee originates in Honduras and Guatamala. Using 8gms of finely ground coffee, you will get an exceptional espresso, or grind a little coarser for top quality filter, cafetiere or Aeropress brews.

Coffee House Lane is the home of Ireland's first coffee!

In 1690, Coffee House Lane, an actual lane in Waterford which was adjacant to the then busy trading port of Waterford, boasted what is long believed to be Ireland's first ever coffee house. Green coffee was traded at the port, then roasted, brewed and sold at John Aikenhead's Coffee House - on Coffee House Lane.

Mark Bergin of Coffee House Lane tells us that 'Our Coffee House Lane range is not just inspired by the name but also by the ethos of coffee roasing and brewing back in 1690. This ethos is the cornerstone of our own business - we select only the finest quality coffee beans from all over the world and roast them in small batches in our Toper Roaster as seen on the front of our coffee packs'

Aikenhead's Freshground coffee originates in Brazil, Colombia and Costa Rica and has slight citrus notes. Use a generous dessert spoon of coffee per cup you plan to make in a Cafetiere, a home percolator or an Aeropress.

  • Bertha’s Revenge Small Batch Irish Milk Gin 70cl

Bertha’s Revenge Small Batch Irish Milk Gin 70cl

Bertha, a legendary Droimeann cow from Sneem, Co. Kerry died in 1993. At 48 years of age she became the world’s oldest cow, having given birth to an eye-bulging 39 calves over her lifetime. To immortalise her memory, we have brought her back in spirit – literally! Using whey alcohol from Irish dairy farmers, our own natural spring water and incorporating an interesting mix of locally foraged and grown botanicals we have hand-crafted a gin reflecting Bertha in her prime. A fragrant nose, soft mouth feel and warming, spicy middle notes to mirror her maternal core. And a long, fruit-driven finish to celebrate her longevity.

Ballyvolane literally translates from Gaelic as ‘the place of springing heifers’ – a testament to the fertility and natural diversity of the land on which the estate lies. The much lauded Ballyvolane House practises a field to fork philosophy when it comes to food. The Ballyvolane House Spirits Company is determined to echo this by championing a grass to glass approach for everything we bottle.

  • Dingle Original Pot Still Gin 70cl

Dingle Original Pot Still Gin 70cl

Dingle Original Gin is the product of a considerable amount of research, both technical and historical, and experimentation. Our aim was to create a totally new gin, one which worked within the great tradition of gin distilling but which also came with a degree of innovation.

Dingle Original Gin is made in small batches of 500 litres. In terms of its broad style, this is what is categorised as a London dry gin but the unique character and flavour come from our painstaking and original choice of botanicals.

This secret combination of flavour elements are macerated in spirit for 24 hours. Then, when the spirit is distilled, it passes through a flavour basket in the neck of the still. This underlines the attention to detail that is an essential part of our whole approach to the art of distillation.

We are not prepared to reveal our recipe but are happy to give some idea of what is involved in creating the unique flavour profile of Dingle Original Gin.. We use, amongst other botanicals, rowan berry from the mountain ash trees, fuchsia, bog myrtle, hawthorn and heather for a taste of the Kerry landscape. It’s a formula unknown elsewhere and is calculated, amongst other things, to create some sense of place and provenance, what winemakers might call the gout de terroir.. The spirit is collected at 70% abv and then cut to 42.5% abv using the purest of water which we draw from our own well, 240 feet below the distillery.

Peter Mosley sums up DOG’s unique character in a few words: “The uniquely Irish botanicals give a fabulously fresh, floral character that perfectly balances the traditional juniper. But, to be honest, you really have to taste it for yourself.”

  • Stonewell Medium Dry Irish Craft Cider 500ml

Stonewell Medium Dry Irish Craft Cider 500ml

This is a classic cider. With a wonderful fresh apple juice aroma and effervescence that tickles the nose the cider gives an initial burst of sweet apple flavour on the palate followed by citrus and woody notes derived from the bittersweet and Jonagored apples used as the base ciders. This carbonated cider is best enjoyed as a refreshing thirst quencher, chilled to 7 degrees (watch the ice – whilst it will maintain the chill it can conceal the full flavour!).

This was our first and remains our most popular cider. The medium dry contains approximately 20% cider apples and 80% eating apples. The cider apples provide the astringency in the cider and the structure on which the full, rounder and more citrus characteristics of the eating apples hang themselves. Our apples for this cider are currently drawn from the counties of Laois, Waterford and Tipperary. The eating apples are harvested from late July through to September and the bittersweet apples are available from October onwards.

We would love to deliver this delicious Stonewell apple cider to you. Due to U.S. legal restrictions on the sale of alcohol into the U.S sale is not permitted.
