This photo shows the Tuberculosis Sanatorium which was completed in 1952.  This became Ardkeen General Hospital in 1958. There is no sign of any retail at Ardkeen, in fact there isnt even any sign of the blackberries that ditrectly preceeded our first shop.  We often meet many customers "of a certain age" that remember picking blackberries!

Ardkeen Quality Food Store is an independent food retailer based on the Dunmore Road in Waterford City on the South East coast of Ireland. The business was founded by Robert and Pamela Jephson in 1967 as a small grocery store with Esso petrol pumps out the front, believe it or not this was quite a novel format back then!

The business has grown in popularity and scale over the years notably a a major redevelopment of Ardkeen Shopping Centre took place in 1998.

John wife Annie D'Alton played Minnie Brennan in the series. The Tiger was the mascot of the Esso brand at the time hence somebody got the job of wearing the tiger suit for the day!

The business quickly becam popular with locals as well as visitors and workers in Ardkeen General Hospital and the many people living in the East Waterford who passed Ardkeen on their way into the City.  The number of people living in the area was tiny bu todays standards.  With Glenville and the front rows of Viewmount only starting to be built. The picture shows that the shop had already been expanded by the time this was taken in the 1970s

Ardkeen Quality Food Store Provision Theatre of Food at EP2017

Electric Picnic is an annual arts and music festival which has been staged since 2004 at Stradbally Hall in Stradbally, Co. Laois. Originally a 1-day event with 10,000 attendees the festival has grown exponentially the last 13 years to now hosting 55,000 people over a three-day weekend.

An eclectic mix of music, cookery demos, tastings, workshops and discussions, The Theatre of Food Marquee is the flagship of food at the festival. The brainchild of John & Sally McKenna, this year yet again ToF attracted an impressive list of luminaries from the Irish food community including Darina Allen, Rory O’Connell, JP McMahon, Gary O’Hanlon and Rosanna Davidson.

For the third year running Ardkeen Quality Food Store were invited to provision the ingredients for Theatre of Food, bringing the very best of Ireland’s artisan and craft food producers to the stage and to the attention of some of Ireland's top chefs.

Colin & Kevin Jephson even took to the stage with fellow Waterfordians and chefs Michael Quinn and Paul Flynn (The Tannery).  Paul was intrigued as to how a small independent store could have thrived let alone survive for 50 years in the midst of international retail giants. The Jephson’s cited strong relationships and a commitment to quality as the reason behind the longevity and success of Ardkeen which boasts both customers and suppliers who are 2nd and 3rd generation.   Michael Quinn was keen to point out provenance also played an important role, reinforced appropriately by cooking  a recipe which included fine Irish producers like Rings Farm, Highbank Orchard, O’Neill’s Bacon and Wexford potatoes.
